Portions of Paradise’ is a documentary I filmed and produced in Vanuatu in 2011. It discusses customary land grabbing on the Island of Efate.
The documentary brings to light the alienation of Melanesian peoples from their own land which was taken over by the French and British more than 200 years earlier. Vanuatu is still dealing with the effects of colonialism. Many of the titles are still have French or British claims to them.
The country is now dealing with a new kind of land grabbing – one perpetuated by real estate companies who buy large portions of land and sell titled portions of customary land online.
