Coronavirus: We need to shut down our borders and prepare our people

coronaThere is no other way to say this to the Government of Papua New Guinea.

Prime Minister,  you need to issue the orders to shut down our borders starting with our international airports.

While every other country is initiating  lockdowns, Papua New Guinea is still receiving flights from Singapore and the Philippines knowing full well, we cannot adequately  screen and track suspected cases.

There appears to be no sense of urgency.

We need to shut down our borders and prepare our people before there is an outbreak. Our efforts will be uphill if we allow the global crisis to arrive on our doorsteps.

I know for a fact that passenger traffic has dropped significantly. If Air Niugini is operating, how much of a revenue has it made in the last two months? How much of a loss will it be if shut down is ordered?  How much of a cost will be for this country if an outbreak happens because we kept our borders open?

Philippine President, Roderigo Duterte, has locked down Manila City due to the Coronavirus. Australia has banned public gatherings.  A travel ban may soon follow.  US President, Donald Trump, has banned travel from Europe for the next 30 days.  Smaller Pacific Islands have issued orders for  their own travel bans.

The amount of investment going into this emergency globally is massive. Fiji has opened a new biomedical lab. Australia has announced a 17 billion dollar stimulus package for its economy.

We are yet to see an outline of a economic strategy to cushion the effects of the corona virus. If not, there has to be some clarity and certainty on what we as a country can and should do.

We understand there has been an “allocation” of K45 million for this operation.  None of the provinces have a fully functioning coronavirus isolation center yet.  Morobe’s Angau Hospital response team is still waiting for the money to come. They are ready to work.

We appreciate all that is being done so far. Your hard work is highly commended.

However, members of the National Executive Council (NEC)  need to show the leadership and ensure there is trust and confidence by maintaining dialogue with the media.

We, the media,  don’t desire a standoff around coronavirus related  information gathering and sharing. We want to help. But it is absolutely frustrating when we get no answers at all or  the answers come with little clarity and direction.

Information needs to be shared and people need to be reassured through  its timely release at  both at the bureaucratic and the political levels.

This is my personal view.

Before such action, allow time for PNG citizens to get back to the country otherwise they will be stranded on the other side.

Its typically will be a concurrent issues if necessary decisions are not to be made. Based on what PM is saying it will be beneficial if both ports (Seas and Air) are ceased off for quarintine and health authorities to exercise possible measures.

All travel in and out of the country should be banned indefinitely until a vaccine to treat the virus is discovered. Currently the ratio 1:80 – 100 that is for every death there is about 80 to 100 people infected. Thus, if it comes into PNG nearly three-quarters (3/4) of the population will be gone based our lifestyle. Therefore, the PM should implement strict measures to avoid or preventing it from arriving on our soil.

100% close all borders to PNG right now, tomorrow will be too late….
Put new law into place anyone with any symptoms of cold or flu or fever to self isolate for a full month.
Even the test kits today are USELESS as they will only detect coravirus which is also a cold or influenza, the new test kits are being made, but PNG will have no chance in hell to obtain any new kits as each country cannot produce enough, and for the new vaccine to be made, again, not a chance in hell it will ever be made, as they would not produce one for the common cold or influenza virus so how on earth they will produce one for this new blend of corra virus…. PLEASE everyone think straight on this virus….
Now for PNG citizens, here is the thing, 80% of PNG are already isolated right in their villages way deep in the mountains, so the world figures of 80% being infected etc, would not apply to PNG, ONLY in the larger towns or cities only….
And for any treatment or medicines to HELP the virus again PNG do not stand a hell in chance of obtaining any, HAS PNG government given every citizen the shots and vaccines for all other diseases NOPE. So what will PNG government do for prevention of this one then?
Guys honestly here, you all know what the government parties will and can do, if I were their to help I would physically stop anyone entering its borders, and make sure no ships get into the port… or ports..
Your major one problem, is that PNG is land connected to Indonesia right….
SELF quarantine is the only key thing with this virus, do not interact with anyone, and if you need to go out use dettol if possible on a cloth and wipe down any handles or other and for gods sake DO NOT exchange cash with each other, as the virus can stick onto any surface for up to 4 days.
Guys its going to be a hell of a ride to combat this virus, like it or not, one thinks this new blend will be here to stay…..
God Bless you all, and please stay healthy and strong mind….
