THE MEDIA: A CONDUIT, AN AGENT OF CHANGE

In Papua New Guinea, the media is a conduit for information that links people in rural areas to decision makers in Waigani. The media has to be used in a manner that adds value to the lives of people. It has to be used to challenge the status quo and accepted standards of behavior.
The media has to take statistics provided by government and foreign development agencies and give a “human face” to inanimate figures. Readers, viewers, listeners and decision makers must know that every “statistic” is a person with feelings and emotions facing everyday challenges.
In Papua New Guinea, the media cannot be just an observer. It is an agent of change and must be used as such. It has to challenge the ills of society and express the views that are not heard. It must be used to generate debate and guide those in positions of authority towards positive outcomes.
It is vital that the views of the people are conveyed, unadulterated, to their parliamentary representatives. It is also vital that the people’s views are not smothered by the political debates emanating from either the government or the opposition.
